I started this when I lived in Brooklyn and struggled for grace in a city that grants moments of beauty and ugliness breathtakingly close to one another. Now I live in a place where things are a different kind of ugly and the beauty is pedestrian. I struggle with that.

One thing I love about NYC is that there are always flowers around.
I teach on the Upper East Side, so there are really nice florists--which are closed by the time I get done with class. But it is so nice to look...and these look like weird sea creatures they way they are craning. Too bad you can't really see how hairy their stems are. It is really so nice to see poppies in winter!
