jolie laide

I started this when I lived in Brooklyn and struggled for grace in a city that grants moments of beauty and ugliness breathtakingly close to one another. Now I live in a place where things are a different kind of ugly and the beauty is pedestrian. I struggle with that.

Arg, I once spent an entire summer drawing what I can only describe as vegetable portraits. I would go to the grocery, and walk out with $.12 worth of still life, and the cashiers wondering what the hell I was going to do with three snow peas. I did a lot of green peppers, and they did draw me in in a fantastic way.

I turned the corner at MOMA a month or so ago and ran into an Edward Weston pepper photo and was positively mesmerized. DOn't know what it is about them...
