jolie laide

I started this when I lived in Brooklyn and struggled for grace in a city that grants moments of beauty and ugliness breathtakingly close to one another. Now I live in a place where things are a different kind of ugly and the beauty is pedestrian. I struggle with that.

I don’t feel much like writing anything new, so I will ream my recent archives…

My heart is crumbling, but you can’t see it. Here I am at the just-right-amount of hip neighborhood bar/resto. I don’t look desperate, I am waiting for a friend, writing and amusing myself. The music is loud, so you can’t hear the fissures start, ruptures, cracking. I like this song, bob my head in time, and you can’t see how it pains me to be unclaimed. Just don’t look too closely, please don’t look too closely. I need my dignity, it is all I have right now.

Oh, I hope, really hope, that I'm reading this wrong.

well, you're probably not.

I kind of figured as much, what with the reading between the lines and all. I didn't want to be presumptuous yesterday when I wrote that, because no one knows what's going on in other people's lives and hearts. But I'm sorry that it's painful, and I hope it gets less so. If I were in Brooklyn, you'd be on the list of people I'd be taking out for drinks if you were up for it.

My heart goes out to you too, ttractor.

thanks. it's not as bad as it sounds. I wrote this a while ago, it is only one facet of how I feel now. noone was cruel or unfair, piles of affection and respect remain intact.

now, who's taking me out for a drink? Or at least going to the big pillow fight in Union Square this weekend with me?

I'll take you out for a drink, ttractor. According to FastCupid, you live within one mile of me!

Pillow fight in Union Square? I am so out of the loop.

I'm in Clinton Hill..you are in PHgts?

I've posted up and blog-spammed everyone at *the other site* about Saturday's event. You in?

oh, and will someone please tell me how to put links to you all on this site? I am going nuts trying to track everyone!

I suspect there's an easier way to do it, but here's my long-ass process:

Get into your behind the scenes window, the one with the tab for "template," and dive into the code behind your blog. Towards the bottom you'll find all the sidebar stuff. Copy the code from your template: you'll be able to see what makes a heading a heading, and how to format the text, &c., and then you can just add sections at will.

I'm sure that there's a more stylish and savvy way to do it, but being a coding know-nothing, I can only parrot what my template-creator gave me. Alas. Someday I'll learn.

Okay, I'll try to be more specific, since it's possible to look in the source code for your blog anyway (which means you can also check mine out, incidentally, if it would help).

What you do, if you want to add links, is follow these instructions, but every time you see a { put in a < and every time you see a } put in a >. The comment box won't let me post actual code.

Look in your template for {h2 class="sidebar-title"}Previous Posts{/h2}. Do a little copy and paste move on this line and position it where you want your link list to go. Then, take out "Previous Posts" and write whatever you want to call your links section. On the next line, put {ul}, and then on the next line, put in {li}{a href="[insert link here]"}BLOG NAME HERE{/a}{/li}
and then you can do line after line that way. After the last one, put {/ul} and you're done. Hope that helps. Don't forget to substitute < > for all the { } I've put in here.

Wow, that all sounds so complimacated. Wordpress is dead simple. I never have to muck around with code.

Oh, and I'm in Central Park Slope, actually.

Don't know if I can make the pillow fight -- I have to be in Bklyn Hghts by 3pm, and the idea of whacking total strangers with pillows fills me with a strange anxiety. But if I don't make it, the beer offer still stands.

I'm sorry to read this. I hope you are feeling at least a little better and that your heart mends quickly.

I wish I could join you at the huge pillow fight. It sounds like an awesome event.

I have like NO doubts that I'm doing this the most complicated way possible.

Next time I'm in Brooklyn I'm getting together with both of you.

Dr. S.: how often do you make it to Brooklyn?

Ttractor: you can't email me there, because my profile's down. I'll email you from the address you use to leave comments on my site.

It cracks me up that we're having this conversation on Ttractor's comments section. I get to Brooklyn once or twice a year, because my best friend lives there (south of Prospect Park). A little part of me actually wants to get there during my spring break (in a couple of weeks) but I have a whole series of projects I'm going to need to be doing here instead of traveling much. Alas. But this summer. Or maybe even sooner--our birthdays are both in April, so I've often made it up in late April / early May, though that was a lot easier when I was in grad school and a lot closer.

hey, I don't mind having this be our little chatty howareya section, as there doesn't really seem to be a place for that.

I am all for meeting people in actuality, so you say when.
