jolie laide: Yesterday on the Lower East Side

jolie laide

I started this when I lived in Brooklyn and struggled for grace in a city that grants moments of beauty and ugliness breathtakingly close to one another. Now I live in a place where things are a different kind of ugly and the beauty is pedestrian. I struggle with that.

I love the colors and the lines in the last one.

thanks S. This is the shuttered firehouse next to my office. It has an interesting history...back when politicos were supported in the ward system, many ward bases drew from the men in firehouses. This particular firehouse was know as the Tammany Tigers, best known for launching the infamous "Boss" Tweed and the Tammany Hall scandals. Up until the firehouse was closed, the trucks still had the tigers painted on them (they were almost as cool as their neighbors next door--the Chinatown Dragon Slayers).

I have been waiting for a sunny day and a passerby for this shot for a while. I am not fully satisfied with it--I think we'll probably be seeing it again somehow!
