jolie laide

I started this when I lived in Brooklyn and struggled for grace in a city that grants moments of beauty and ugliness breathtakingly close to one another. Now I live in a place where things are a different kind of ugly and the beauty is pedestrian. I struggle with that.

It's rare that something moves me. But this moved me.

ah, please, Dr S, I am leaking too much already. oh--I see--I mean this post was my final flare.

But I am so glad that the sun is brilliant, that tiny birds are hop hopping along the cut glass on top of the fence, because that means I have one less thing to struggle against.

okay, okay, I get it. Sorry that I was dense earlier. I kept trying to think, "Did she know that someone had left graffiti for her?" "Did she leave the graffiti for someone else?" I couldn't make sense of it, and so I figured that you were talking about someone else, which confused me all the more, because I thought maybe you were writing about knowing that someone else had written that for, um, someone else.

So, let's just say definitively and comprehensively, I'm sorry, and I wouldn't have asked you to leak anything.

I will post a happy graffiti-related post for you this evening. It will be for you. So just you wait. I have to earn my April 2 writing time with some actual scholarly work, but by midnight there will be something there, and it will be dedicated to you because I was thinking of your "look up!" "look down!" suggestions when I went out with my camera earlier.
